Blackbird BlackbirdI’ve only recently stumbled across Blackbird Blackbird, but he’s been putting out music for a couple years now. Since 2010, Mikey Sanders has put out 3 albums, from his debut Summer Heart in 2010, Halo in 2011, and this year’s Boracay Planet. In addition to this, he’s pumped out a several singles and a free EP called Modern Disbelief. Sanders’ style is dreampop / chillwave, so if you like Washed Out, etc. then have a listen. You can preview / buy it all at his bandcamp page. A few highlights are below.

Heems – Wild Water Kingdom Mixtape

•November 15, 2012 • 2 Comments

Heems from Das Racist dropped another mixtape this week, a follow up to Nehru Jackets from earlier this year. This one features production from Crookers (!), Keyboard Kid, LE1F, Mike Finito, Beautiful Lou, and others. It’s full of Heem’s lazy flow and signature wordplay, including humorous pop culture allusions and foreign references (“my bread big like that Pakistani roti”).  Here’s what Heems had to say about the mixtape to Rolling Stone:

Wild Water Kingdom is more [like] the music I listened to after independent rap, [in] 2001, when, like, The Blueprint dropped and I started appreciating mainstream rap again, and Dipset after. I fuck with shit like Meek Mill and French Montana, and this is more in the vein of what I listen to now.”

You can download it here or stream it below.

The Octopus Project – Whitby [Video]

•November 12, 2012 • Leave a Comment

The Octopus Project is an indie-electronic band out of Austin. This was that band that played with 2/3 of Devo at Moogfest 2010. Anyway, they’ve just released a single from their upcoming 2013 album, which will be the band’s fifth. The track is called “Whitby” and the video pretty bonkers. Here’s what the band had to say about it.

Created, shot and directed by the band, the stop-motion extravaganza was crafted entirely using die-cut colored card stock. Band members meticulously designed each shape in Photoshop then used a cutting machine generally reserved for scrapbooking to cut them out before photographing them in real world settings. The final video consists of over 4,000 separate images.
