Jónsi In Concert

Jón Þór Birgisson (a.k.a. Jónsi) is the lead vocalist and guitarist for Icelandic post-rockers Sigur Rós. Recently the band announced a hiatus to pursue solo careers and spend time with family. Jónsi released his solo album, Go, earlier this year in April which includes string arrangements by classical composer Nico Muhly. If you’re not familiar with Sigur Rós, one cool fact is that Jónsi sings some songs–and in the case of (), the whole album–in Hopelandic, which is a language created by Jónsi himself. Hopelandic, or Vonlenska in Icelandic, has no syntax, no grammar, no meaning, and no distinct words. Comparable to scat singing in jazz, its only use to go along with the music to use Jónsi’s vocals as another instrument. The band describes it as “a form of gibberish vocals that fits to the music”. Continue reading to hear more about Jónsi’s ethereal live show and see some videos, including a full live show.

Jónsi is currently touring in support of Go, which includes an elaborate stage production put together by the London production outfit 59 Productions. The idea was like the reverse of a movie soundtrack, in which composers adapt sound to scenes, and more like a visualtrack where visuals are adapted to sound. As Leo Warner of 59 Productions describe it, it’s like a cross between an art installation, a live gig, and a film. Video is displayed on walls from 9 projectors encompassing a stage setup filled with scattered props. “What we’ve been able to do with Jonsi is to kind of take a stage and take a set up and really make something come out of that that the audience isn’t expecting — creating an emerging world that happens in front of people’s eyes,” Warner says.

Recently, at the Wiltern in LA, one of these live shows was filmed and can be seen at its entirety over at NPR, but you have to check it out today to catch the full thing, because starting tomorrow, they’ll only have some favorite clips available. Check it out here.

Jónsi is included in the lineup for Moogfest, which is coming up in Asheville in a few weeks. This will be a must-see.
