Downtown Raleigh Amphitheatre Opening This Summer

As you may have heard by now, Raleigh is getting an outdoor amphitheatre right smack in the middle of town. This is excellent news. Bands will now have an alternative to choose a central venue to play outdoor gigs rather than putting up the outdoor stage at Lincoln Theatre or holding the show over in Cary at Koka Booth. The venue will apparently be called the “Raleigh Boutique Amphitheatre”, which is a disappointing name…something like “Oak Amphitheatre” (which I think is already taken, but still) would have been cool to give it some distinction. Although, it doesn’t really matter because eventually a sponsor will change the name just as in the case of Walnut Creek; soon enough it will be the “Progress Energy Amphitheatre”, “RBC Park”, or “The Sound Medium” (yeah, we’ve gotten a few calls).

The initial band schedule holds some promise with acts like The Black Crowes, Sound Tribe Sector 9, and Slightly Stoopid. Those are the best names of the 8 summer dates already announced and with other names like the Backstreet Boys, Heart, and Sevendust, any new announcements, if any, could go either way. We’ll keep you updated.

Read on to see the summer schedule and a overhead rendering of the venue…

June 6 – Backstreet Boys
July 23 – Paramore, Tegan & Sara, New Found Glory
July 25 – Shinedown, Puddle of Mudd, Chevelle, Sevendust, 10 Years

August 10 – OAR, Citizen Cope
[UPDATE] August 13 – Umphrey’s McGee w/ Rebelution

  2. Milton, why no call out on the Heart show in the highlights section? that will be the show of the summer.

  3. Well, I was hesitant since it’s still TBA…I don’t want to jinx it. Who books a band for a TBA date anyway?
