The Disco Biscuits: Haymaker 2002

In October of 2002, The Disco Biscuits arguably played their two most important shows of their careers. In the period after the first hiatus of Phish, many up and coming jam bands were clamoring to acquire the recently orphaned fan base, including String Cheese Incident, moe., Sound Tribe Sector 9, Umphrey’s McGee, etc. Also, after the booming success of Bonnaroo in 2002, several other music festivals were including more and more of these acts. The Haymaker Music Festival took place on October 4 and 5, 2002 at Oakley Farm in Spotsylvania, VA . Other acts included Bruce Hornsby & Steve Kimock, Leftover Salmon, Keller Williams, Robert Randolph, and more. The Disco Biscuits were given the sole late night spot both nights, which was a great opportunity to impress a whole new set of potential fans; they did just that by playing 4 of their best sets over the two nights, going well into the each morning.

The first night, the Biscuits didn’t even come onstage until 2:30 AM and played until 6:00 AM.

The second night, after some complaints from the locals, the Biscuits went on a little earlier, but still played until 3:00 AM. The second night tops the first night (which says a lot), with a really tight first set consisting of only four songs! Hot Air Balloon is so smooth and the Astronaut may be one of the best jams this band has ever performed…seriously. The second set begins with Save The Robots, which has a nice jazzy middle section. The boys drop into a really smooth groove around the 9:20 mark of The Very Moon…don’t miss that. The weekend ends with a cover of Pink Floyd’s Run Like Hell which needed no encore.

After these shows, the Disco Biscuits had a great end to 2002 and one of their most successful years in 2003. This festival gave them plenty of exposure and the sole ownership of the late night stage, where the biscuits would prove to thrive, ensured the audience would know the Disco Biscuits were a force to be reckoned with.
