Coming Soon: The Whigs – In the Dark

The Whigs - In the Dark

The Athens, GA power trio is back!  On the heels of their hard charging 2008 effort Mission Control, the Whigs will release their third album titled In the Dark on March 16 on ATO Records.   From what they’ve released so far, they are picking up right where they left off…

Take the jump for more In the Dark details, links to free mp3 downloads and East Coast tour dates…

In the Dark Track Listing:

1. Hundred / Million
2. Black Lotus
3. Kill Me Carolyne
4. Someone’s Daughter
5. So Lonely
6. Dying
7. I Don’t Even Care About the One I Love
8. Automatic
9. I Am for Real
10. In the Dark
11. Naked

Three of the new songs — Hundred/Million, Kill Me Carolyne, and the title track have already been leaked by the band, and you can get them straight from their website.

The first thing that struck me was how confident and “grown up” the Whigs sound on the three new songs.  As was the case when they followed up their debut album Give ‘Em All A Big Fat Lip with Mission Control, the Whigs seem to have again tightened up their songcraft with the new album, and the time they spent off the road in 2009 writing songs shows in the way they have incorporated more melody and even a little vocal harmony (?!) without sacrificing too much of their signature garage punch.

Contra their new album title, I think the Whigs will be taking a big step into the spotlight this year.  You’ve got to respect their management for the way they supported Mission Control with a relentless barage of TV appearances and tour dates with everyone from the Drive-By Truckers to the Kooks in 2008, and followed that up with tours supporting Kings of Leon right when the latter’s multi-Grammy winning Only By the Night was about to make them a household name.

The Whigs open 2010 with several West Coast tourdates supporting Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and In the Dark is scheduled to drop the day before they are set to play four days straight at SXSW on the way back east for a club tour co-headlining with Band of Skulls.

And just for the hell of it, here’s some video of the Whigs doing their thing live:
