In a semi-tribute to the New Orleans Saints making their first Super Bowl in the franchise’s 43 year history, I’m posting the last epic Panic show (and one of my top 5 Panic shows of all-time) played in the Big Easy.  I am stoked about Super Bowl XLIV that features the two best offenses in the NFL, captained by the two best quarterbacks on Earth.  This should make for an outstanding matchup.

Super Bowl XLIV interesting facts:
1. This will be the first time since 1993 (Super Bowl XXVII when Dallas crushed Buffalo, 52-17) that the two #1 seeds will face each other.
2.  Drew Brees will be the first quarterback in NFL history to play against 3 straight previous Super Bowl champion quarterbacks in the playoffs- Kurt Warner, Brett Favre, and Peyton Manning.

As heartwarming as a Saints win would be, I still gotta go with Peyton Manning and the Colts in a close, high-scoring game: Colts 34 – Saints 31.

**Disclaimer – I’m not a Saints fan, I just needed a good reason to post this show**

In regards to the Panic show, this one is pure heat.  From the ferocious Disco > Love Tractor opener, the band never lets up.  Sunny’s percussion work during the breakdown in Disco summons the Gods, the climax of Love Tractor is 6-headed monster fury, and Mikey mimics a buzzsaw during the filthy Blight jam into the best Machine > Barstools the band has ever pulled off.  As if that isn’t enough, the Proving > Worry > Proving will make you want to punch holes in the wall.  This is just the first set, folks…

The second set is more of the same.  The rare Mikey original, Sandbox into a blistering Conrad really sets the tone for how dirty the second set would continue to be.  The boys decided it would be a great idea to split up Low Spark of High Heeled Boys 3 times, and throw in a funky Use Me for good measure.  The transitions are absolutely flawless, and Karl Denson’s sax along with Col. Bruce’s awkwardly-heavy guitar licks add some jazzy textures to the mayhem.  The ultimate highlight lies in the rare, unsplit version of Driving Song.  Check out the 3:05-3:50 mark of the youtube video (one of my all-time favorite Panic moments) where Mikey channels pure voodoo magik in his guitar solo.

In other Widespread Panic news, the band is back in Athens, GA recording a new studio album with John Keane (the secret genius behind Widespread Panic) as producer.  The album is due out later this year.  Stay tuned for updates.

  1. Thanks. Awesome show. It’s too bad the Bengals didn’t make the Super Bowl. I can only imagine what Panic classic you would have pulled.
